We know the loving joy and youthful spirit that has been embodied there by your presence. We were beneficiaries of all of that and more. Know that we sorrow with you as you prepare to leave, but will rejoice as you ready to come here. It's time to make some new memories here in the Commonwealth. Come, make haste, and take rest with us.

I wish that there was no loss in your decision to leave, and, at the same time, I am glad that the Cushman has been a refuge for you in your time there. I don't know - do you think that who we want to be is a distant ideal, especially when we are younger? Maybe the comforting piece in all this is that, through experience with the complexities of life, as we grow older, who we want to be grows closer to the reality of who we are. Also - just to point out - environment has a lot to do with who someone is, I believe that. But I also think that, in this case, it's not you who falls short of who you wanted to be, but the place that falls short of where. Right?

oh, and to be absolutely truthful, all of this is so familiar. does wishing make it so? does that part of our past mold our future? i think yes, but then wonder if some of my own dreams would feel shrunken in reality.

And what I hear in the back of my mind is "this too shall pass". Sending you prayers that you'll keep your head above it all, your heart in the midst of all of it, and always let your love and humor carry you through it.

The restlessness you catch is also familiar. And for me, at least, at my back I always hear Frances Cornford hurrying near: "A young Apollo, golden-haired,/Stands dreaming on the verge of strife,/Magnificently unprepared/For the long littleness of life." She wrote it about Rupert Brooke, but it's all too [un]comfortably familiar, this long littleness...

I have certainly enjoyed reading your writing. What a lovely family you are!

Oh, you are so right about the feral realit[ies] of those early-morning hours which somehow serve (why do we think they should?) as no barriers between the frightful nightfalls and their foldings of the rueful days.

Upstairs, hunh? And the dog didn't go after the squirrel? You're lucky...
I, for one (:-)) would let the dog lick the spit up. Easier to clean off dog licks than that biochemical spill!
